Wisdom for Walter from Hub

I loved this scene from 'Second Hand Lions'
and commend its brilliance to you and to my son's and myself.

When the young "nephew", Walter tells his "uncle", Hub that he does not know what to believe in because he does not know what is true, he gets this speech from his "uncle", played brilliantly by Robert Duval.

"Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things that a man needs to believe in most:
That people are basically good.
That honor courage and virtue mean every thing.
That power and money, money and power mean nothing.
That good always triumphs over evil.
and I want you to remember this... Love ( choking up)
TRUE LOVE never dies.
you remember that boy
You remember that
It does not matter if they are true or not.
A man should believe in those things because those are the things
worth believing in. Got that?"

Do you agree with his point of view, or not, and why?

I believe without an ideology as a goal, there's just no motovation to try to be better than ya aleady are. But once in a while, it's important to realize the truth of a situation before anything can be found to help solve a problem.
"Hope" is probably the point of that speech. To not believe these things is to give up on hope that they can be true.

Are ya a philosophy professor, or what?

David - I agree. True love will always be up.

We have no choice but to believe that there is something that trancends evil.

I loved Robert Duval in "The Great Santini!"

I profess one philosophy and the one teacher/ rabbi Yeshua of Nazareth.

Neo - I know good when I see it and I know evil when I smell its putrid breath. I found love on a two way street and lost it in the laundromat.

Jayleigh, you have that wedding on your mind, but a heart as big as Minnesota, ehh?

Well, David, I took the plunge and became an official part of the blogging world. I even linked to your site! :)

I agree and disagree with the statements. I think it is really important to believe in true truth. You know, the real thing. The Bible tells us there is none good, not even one. If we realize that, we won't be disappointed when we see that. We then have realistic expectations. I find it is much easier to love people when I am not expecting them to be good. I accept where they are at.....and remember, Jesus himself asked why that guy called him good. He said,"Why do you call me good?" No one is good—except God alone." But I do believe it is good to hold to an objective truth....if not we are tossed back and forth.

I'm almost afraid to comment with all the deleted ones on this thread. I haven't seen this film, but I have enjoyed other RD films.

I think part of this is true, but I'd like to see the film before I comment fully. Sometimes the tone effects my feelings.

I saw that movie this past summer and it is one of my all-time favorites. I agree with most of what you quoted here.

I saw your name at Michele's and decided to visit. I will come back.
